Meditation Groups in Nanaimo and Area
5:00 - 6:30 pm. River of the Heart Sangha is in the Plum Village (Thich Nhat Hanh) Tradition. The format is opening, introductions, meditation (chanting, guided meditation, silent meditation), offering of teaching and Dharma sharing. The offering of teaching varies week to week. 7:15 - 9:00 pm.The Nanaimo Dharma Practice Group meets during the school year. First meeting for 2018-2019 is scheduled for Sep. 11. We plan on starting the year with an exploration of The Noble Eightfold Path. When that is complete we will be reading and discussing Sylvia Boorstein’s book, “Happiness Is an Inside Job.” We take a summer break from the end of June until September.
We meet 181 Bird Sanctuary Drive, Nanaimo. The evening format is as follows:
7:15 – Invitation to meditate – ½ hour meditation, mostly silent; sometimes guided, tea and discussion regarding practice during the past week, read, discuss and decide on a practice for the coming week, a brief, closing meditation, departure – about 9:00 PM, You are invited to join us in practice. 7 pm. Come and join us for a warm and welcoming introduction to Zen. This is a free event and beginners are welcome. Held on the second Tuesday of every month at 7pm in the Sacred Space at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. We will have 3 x 15 minute periods of sitting meditation with walking meditation in between. Eshu Osho will be coming up from Victoria, and we hope that you will stay for discussion afterwards. 7:00 - 9:00 pm. Meet at Mia Tremblay's home, 721 Northumberland Avenue. Practicing mainly in the Burmese Theravada tradition though all are welcome. A 45-minute silent sit with brief guidance at the beginning and a 5 min guided Metta (loving-kindness) at the end. This is followed by Dhamma study and discussion. This group meets year round. 6:30 - 8:00. Dharma Circle, third Thursday of the month. Meet to meditate, read and discuss the Dharma (teachings of Buddha). “Listening, reflecting and meditating are said to be the three levels of wisdom in the Buddhist tradition. We are encouraged to explore the truth for ourselves, not to take on the teachings unexamined. Meditate 15 minutes at start and end, share tea (optional), share a Dharma reading 20-30 minutes, discussion 15-20 minutes.

10:00 - noon. The Nanaimo Buddhist Meditation Group at Buddha House, 587 Seventh Street. Although the group uses the Vietnamese Buddhist temple and follows Thich Nhat Hanh’s service ceremony, the meditators come from and study all different Buddhist traditions.
